Elmax® Powder Steel

Carbon: Along with iron, carbon is the base element in all steel. It increases edge retention, raises tensile strength, increases hardness and improves resistance to wear and abrasion.

The backbone of all steel.

Vanadium: Increases wear resistance and edge retention. At ~2800 Vickers, vanadium carbide, is among the hardest carbides seen in steel. Elmax has 30x more V than the most popular German steel.

Sharper for longer—up to 2.3x longer.

Chromium: Leads to the formation of a chromium oxide layer on the blade surface which protects the steel from rusting.

Keeps corrosion at bay.

Molybdenum: Helps with pitting resistance and supports the chromium oxide layer. It adds protection from water, acid, and salt.

3rd generation powder steel. Small & homogenous carbides make for a tough (hard to chip) steel, despite high alloy content. Knives can be ground thin as a result. 3.0% vanadium (~2800 Vickers) lends itself to very high wear resistance. Together, these allow for a thin and tough knife that stays sharper longer. 60+ Rockwell for best results.
Ingot steel. Mid-sized & heterogeneous carbides, combined with thin grinds, create potential for severe edge damage. Knives should be ground a bit thicker with less acute edge geometry to avoid edge failure. Given high carbon content, these knives can cut well for long periods, if used gently. 59-62 Rockwell for best results.
Ingot steel. Large & heterogenous carbides create potential for severe edge chipping, despite low alloy content. Knives should be ground thick, with wide edge angles. Therefore, these knives are typically heavy, cut poorly, and dull quickly. 52-57 Rockwell for best results.
Ingot steel. Small and homogeneous carbides, with low alloy content makes for a tough, but very low edge-retention steel. Knives should be ground thin with acute geometry given how quickly the edge will dull. 60+ Rockwell for best results.
Ingot steel. Small and homogenous carbides, with ~1% carbon content, makes for a tough, medium edge retention steel. Knives should be ground thin, with acute geometry. 52100 has almost no corrosion resistance, and must be wiped down constantly during prep sessions.
